The Kabbalist, Rabbi Micha, and the Karaite, Elijah, completed Manon’s dybbuk cleansing, but somehow felt they accomplished little. The psalm was read, the amulets placed, names of G-d were spoken, and the shofar blown. Yet, the spirit that clung to the girl held tight. The other eight members of the circle were dismissed, Elijah and Micha wanting to discuss the matter alone.

“We have failed, Elijah. Our young sister has been lost in the grip of this dybbuk.”

“Rabbi, you may be correct, but we have to keep trying.”

“No. The longer we delay the inevitable, the more dangerous being in this room with her becomes.”

“Rabbi.”

“The decision has to be made. I fear what damage will be done to her soul if we allow her more time.”

FEAR NOT, LITTLE FLOCK; FOR IT IS YOUR FATHER’S GOOD PLEASURE THAT YE SHALL SEE THIS ANGEL OF GOD DESCENDING INTO THIS DAUGHTER OF MAN.” Rising from the ground, Manon spoke to the two men. She looked directly into Micha’s eyes, then Elijah’s. The words pouring forth from her mouth, slow and calculated, struck the men. They were brought to their knees as the girl continued, lips mouthing each word she spoke.

I CERTIFY YOU, BRETHREN, THAT THE SOD HA’IBBUR WHICH IS BEFORE YOU IS NOT PREPARED BY THE DEVIL, BUT BY HE THAT DESIRES TO SHEW UNTO HIS SERVANTS THINGS WHICH MUST SHORTLY COME TO PASS. AND WHILE YE BELONG TO A GENERATION OF VIPERS, I KNOW THY WORKS, AND THY LABOUR, AND THY PATIENCE, AND HOW THOU CANST NOT BEAR THEM WHICH ARE EVIL. THE DAY WHEN GOD SHALL JUDGE THE SECRETS OF MEN IS AT HAND. AND YE SHALL BARE RECORD OF THE WORD.
